Chautauqua has not been tested at the distance for close to two years, but remains an outright $2.90 favourite in 2017 Canterbury Stakes betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.

A multiple Group 1 champion, Chautauqua enjoyed his best campaign on record last autumn; highlighted by wins in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) and Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).

Returning from a successful trip abroad which heralded an impressive win in the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) in Hong Kong, the Encosta De Lago gelding failed to come up in the spring and was returned to the paddock after a lacklustre run for seventh in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).

Having run on for third in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) first-up, Chautauqua appears as though he will relish a step up in distance and could find his ideal ran in the Canterbury Stakes.

Music Magnate is yet to herald much interest in 2017 Canterbury Stakes betting markets, but remains the sole occupant of the second line at a $3.80 quote.

Music Magnate returned to racing in 2016 for a classy win in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m), before running a close second behind Clearly Innocent in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) at Scone on May 14th.

Rated only an outside chance of success in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) upon arriving in Brisbane, the Written Tycoon gelding mustered a big turn of foot late to break through for a maiden win at the highest level.

Returning to the paddock after failing to produce anything and sixteenth in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), Music Magnate resumed this time for a smart win in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) and will enjoy a return to 1300m on Saturday.

Le Romain is a wet track specialist and arguably offers punters the best value for money in Canterbury Stakes betting markets at a current $5 quote.

Le Romain broke through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600) at this meet in 2016, but was returned to the paddock after failing to get the trip in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Posting a number of strong and consistent results amongst black type company through spring, the Hard Spun gelding was held up in traffic before finishing well for fifth in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), but ended his year in the best way possible with a comfortable win in the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m).

Le Romain is drawn well and will be partnered by Glyn Schofield, who will take over from the suspended Hugh Bowman.
