Le Romain has been a star of Lees’ Newcastle operation for more than a year and broke through for a maiden win at the highest level at this meet last year, when he led home Press Statement in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

Having returned to competition for a smart win in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Randwick a fortnight ago, Lees said that the Hard Spun gelding revel in the conditions of Royal Randwick, which is currently rated a ‘Heavy 9’.

“He’ll definitely run,” Lees told AAP.

“He likes the wet and it’s three weeks since his first-up run which suits him.

“It was a good win under a big weight (61kg).”

Le Romain carries an impressive record of five wins and a further seven minors, through fourteen career starts into his berth in the 2017 Canterbury Stakes field.

Resuming in 2016 for a smart win in the Schweppes Quality (1000m), Le Romain made a strong transition to black type company when second behind Spill The Beans in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) and finished second to Press Statement in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) prior to winning the Randwick Guineas.

Returning to the paddock after running seventh in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), the gelding out of Mignard finished second in each of the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m), Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1350m) upon resuming in spring.

Placing fifth in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 1st, Le Romain stormed home at a $15 quote to cap his year with a smart win in the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Derby Day.

The 2017 Canterbury Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, today.
