Chautauqua has lost the turn of foot that he once harboured and subsequently appears as though he will relish a step up to 1300m when he lines up in the 2017 Canterbury Stakes field.

A multiple Group 1 winner, Chautauqua returned to racing in 2016 for a standout win in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) and while unable to make up the distance on The Quarterback late when third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m), but responded with an impressive defence of his crown in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).

An impressive winner of the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) in Hong Kong in May, the Encosta De Lago gelding failed to come up in spring and was sent to the paddock after placing fourth in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) and seventh in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).

Sure to have taken plenty of benefit from a first-up run for third in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m), Chautauqua is undoubtedly the class horse of 2017 Canterbury Stakes nominations.

Happy Clapper will target the 2017 Doncaster Mile this time in and will contest the same path which led to an impressive second behind Winx in The Championships feature in 2016; beginning with a berth in the Canterbury Stakes.

Running a handy fourth in the Canterbury Stakes last year, the son of Teofilo progressed to fifth in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) prior to his impressive run in the Doncaster Mile.

Returning to the paddock after running on for third in the major Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), Happy Clapper resumed in spring for mid-pack finishes in each of the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m).

Storming home to finish fourth in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), Happy Clapper ran on well for an impressive sixth in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), but had clearly had enough by the time he ran ninth in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (2000m).

Godolphin is set to launch a multi-pronged attack on the feature race after John O’Shea included both Hauraki and Impending in 2017 Canterbury Stakes nominations.

Hauraki has been a standout for Godolphin through his entire racing career so far and will return to racing with an impressive record of five wins and ten minors, through twenty-two competitive starts.

Resuming in spring for a smart win in the Tramway Stakes, the Reset gelding finished second to Winx in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) before storming home to post a maiden win at the highest level in the Epsom Handicap.

Failing to handle the conditions when eighth in the Cox Plate, Hauraki was last seen working home to finish second in the Emirates takes on November 5th.

Impending is perhaps the wave of the future for Godolphin and has already posted a number of smart results, without luck at the highest level.

Running third in each of the Group 2 The Run To The Rose (1020m) and Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in early spring, before winning the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) on September 24th.

Running a credible fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), the son of Lonhro resumed for sixth in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) and will enjoy a step up in distance this weekend.

The 2017 Canterbury Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
