2016 Canterbury Stakes First-Up for Kermadec

January 21st, 2016

Kermadec posted a number of typically impressive results through the recent Spring Carnival, and trainer Chris Waller has revealed the 2016 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) will figure as the first point of call for the entire upon resuming this time.

Waller has had a huge opinion of Kermadec since the horse debuted to racing in the late stages of 2014, and that idea proved warranted when the horse produced a number of impressive performances during the 2015 autumn, peaking with success in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) during The Championships.

Kermadec was unable to cap an otherwise impressive spring preparation when beating only one runner home in the Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 24th, but Waller told Sky Racing HQ he has taken particularly well to his time away from competition and will be ready to fire in the 2016 Canterbury Stakes first-up.

“He has returned very well,” Waller said.

“We are going to keep him to the shorter distances and probably end up in the Doncaster to defend his title.

“We will see him resume in the Canterbury Stakes, which is well into the Carnival.

“I just think that he struggles to get out beyond a mile and I think that he is a sprinter/miler.

“It will be the fifth of March, then the George Ryder and then the Doncaster.”

Kermadec has posted an impressive four wins and as many minors through only 13 career starts to date, highlighted by two triumphs at the highest level.

Returning in 2015 for fourth in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) in early February, the Teofilo entire progressed to third in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) before running fourth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) and third in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) leading into the Doncaster Mile.

Resuming in spring for fifth in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m), Kermadec placed second in the talent-rich Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) before winning the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 19th; running fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) in his only other start prior to the Cox Plate.
