Talented sprinter Fontelina will not line up for Saturday’s Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Royal Randwick after being kicked by a stable mate on Friday morning.
Posting four wins and a further two minor places finishes from his 22 competitive appearances on course so far, Fontelina has not been seen at the races since placing an agonizingly-close second to Spirit Of Boom in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) last March.
Understandably disappointed by the unfortunate circumstances, trainer Anthony Cummings told TVN the son of Testa Rossa will be kept for another tilt at the William Reid Stakes first-up; to be contested at Moonee Valley on March 27th.
“A horse got excited behind him, lashed out and caught him on the shoulder,” Cummings said.
“There is a bit of pain there so he had to be scratched.
“He has got a little cut, nothing too serious but I’d say he will have to be on the slow list for a week.
“It is disappointing because the horse had been working well and looked a chance on Saturday.
“We will just have to wait for the William Reid now.”
Arguably one of the country’s standout sprinters yet to break through for a victory at the highest level, Fontelina posted several impressive results over the 2013 edition of the Spring Carnival; winning the Group 2 Yellowglen Stakes (1200m) and finished an unbelievably close second to Rebel Dane in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and fourth in the Group 1 VRC Sprint (1200m) most notably.
Having contested just one race; the William Reid Stakes in 2014 before returning to the paddock with a tendon injury, Fontelina has been included in nominations for each of the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) through the Autumn Carnival.
