March 11th, 2014

A talented field of 10 has been nominated for the 2014 Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Royal Randwick this weekend, arguably elevating the race to the most highly-anticipated and hotly-contested event of the day, despite sharing the race card with the major Randwick Guineas (1600m).

Trainer Chris Waller is set to dominate the final field for the 2014 Canterbury Stakes, having nominated four of his stables stars including Zoustar, Red Tracer, My Kingdom Of Fife and Sacred Falls.

Poised to make his 2014 debut in the Canterbury Stakes on Saturday, Zoustar was undoubtedly one of the standout performers of the 2013 spring, following up an unlucky third in the Group 3 Run To The Rose (1200m) with strong wins in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m), Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on November 2nd ahead of fellow Canterbury Stakes nominee Not Listenin’tome.

Having claimed six wins and 1 place from only eight starts to date, a trip to Britain to line up at Royal Ascot is well and truly on the cards for the talented Northern Meteor colt this year, who will first contest a busy Australian Autumn that will peak in either the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) or Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 12th.

Red Tracer scored two wins at Group 1 level in 2013, including the Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) and Myer Classic (1600m) and finished outside the places on only one occasion in eight other races.

The talented Dane Shadow mare has returned to the track in peak condition in 2014, displaying her incredible final straight turn of foot to comfortably beat A Time For Julia and Lucky Lago home in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) first-up at Rosehill on March 1st.

Trainer Guy Walter is also set to field his stable’s stars in the 2014 Canterbury Stakes, having nominated Appearance, Streama and Toydini for this weekend’s Group 1.

At an HCP Rating of 116, Appearance is the most highly-rated runner included in nominations for the Canterbury Stakes, having claimed eight wins and three places from only 18 competitive starts to date.

Geared towards appearances in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) and Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) this preparation, the classy commands mare has so-far produced a perfect start to 2014, claiming both the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400); each by nearly two lengths.

Finishing outside the places just once in 10 starts throughout 2013, Streama was undoubtedly one of the most consistent Australian race horses of the year, arguably peaking when beating Royal Descent by a nose in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 21st.

While finishing a disappointing fifth (of seven) in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) first-up at Rosehill on February 15th, Walter is confident the classy Stratum mare will return to her best throughout the 2014 autumn, starting with an assault on the Canterbury Stakes this weekend.

Joseph Pride-trained Rain Affair has also been included in nominations for the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) on the same Randwick card, while Colin Scott-trained Speediness completes nominations for the 2014 Canterbury Stakes. is currently offering the best odds on all 2014 autumn races, including the Canterbury Stakes!
