Trainer Gai Waterhouse is asking the public to acknowledge that the 2013 Canterbury Stakes is more than just a match race between More Joyous and Pierro.
While it will be the first time the two successful stable mates have come together in a race, there will still be competition from the likes of Moment Of Change in the Group 1 event.
“This is a showdown of maturity versus youth,” Waterhouse said.
“Both are fit and well. I don’t know who will win. Perhaps Pierro’s tenacity gets him home, and his lower weight?
“But it is a not a match race, there is a strong field.
“Moment Of Change, whom I expect to lead, ran second with a big weight earlier this month in the Newmarket, the toughest 1200m race in the world.”
Moment Of Change was just pipped at the post by Shamexpress in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap last start.
Prior to that run, he finished a gallant second to Black Caviar in her record-setting Lightning Stakes run in February.
Moment Of Change, who is tipped to be the next big thing to come of out of the Moody stable since Black Caviar, has won five of his 11 race starts and has earned close to $700,000 in prize money during his career.
More Joyous will be having her first autumn start in the 2013 Canterbury Stakes this weekend, while Pierro will go into the race on the back of a first-up win in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes.
