2013 Canterbury Stakes Given Group 1 Status

September 13th, 2012

The 2013 Canterbury Stakes will be run as a Group 1 after it was upgraded from its current Group 2 status yesterday.

The next Canterbury Stakes is due to run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday March 23, 2012.

Run over a distance of 1,300 metres, the race is presently worth $175,000 in prize money.

The Canterbury Stakes’ prize money will have to be upgraded to $350,000 in keeping with the standards of Group 1 racing.

The race is open to horses of all ages and is run under weight-for-age conditions.

Australian Pattern Committee chairman, Alan Brown, told of the reasons behind the Canterbury Stakes’ upgrade to Group 1 status.

“The Canterbury Stakes was the highest-ranking Group Two race in Australia last year and rated higher than the Doomben 10,000, the only other Group One race in Australia over a similar distance,” Brown said.

More Joyous has won the Canterbury Stakes on two occasions and has added to the race’s top ranking.
