2011 Canterbury Stakes Final Field & Weights

March 16th, 2011

At Rosehill Racecourse this Saturday March 19th the $175,000 Canterbury Stakes will jump with a tiny final field entered for the Group 2 event.

Just five horses will line up in the race with More Joyous likely to be a massive odds on favourite.

Out of barrier five it’s hard to see the Gai Waterhouse trained superstar ever being really challenged given she’s easily won horse races three times the size of this in her most recent runs.

The four time Group 1 winner took the Breeders Classic first up by more than two lengths and then the Futurity Stakes by a comparably easy margin last start.

Her only foreseeable threat comes from Rangirangdoo which will be first up since winning last year’s Doncaster Mile.

It’s a big gamble given he’s been off the track for so long but a Group 1 winner should never be discounted, especially with Corey Brown in the saddle.

The other runners in the 2011 Canterbury Stakes Field are:

Love Conquers All – Ran a good second to Centennial Park in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes but was out classed to fifth last start in the Apollo Stakes.

Empires Choice – Won the Queensland Derby way back in 2007 but never kicked to that next level. Was third behind More Joyous last year in the George Main Stakes.

Demerit – The lowest rated runner in the field has barrier one and is trained by Peter Snowden. Will be first up for the season in the Canterbury Stakes.

Favourite backers will be all over this one and the exotic takers won’t be far away either.
