Nine brilliant gallopers are engaged to start in this year’s $150, 000 Group 2 MYER Canterbury Stakes (1300m), which is set to take place this Saturday at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse as part of the Sydney Autumn Carnival’s Coolmore Classic Day.
Anthony Cummings’ dual Group 1 winner Turffontein has drawn wide but is still a strong chance
Anthony Cummings’ dual Group 1 winner Turffontein drawn wide in barrier eight will be looking to return to the winning form that saw him come away with a win in the William Reid Stakes two starts back.
The five-year-old ran a strong fifth in the Newmarket Handicap last start and will be ridden by big race expert Glen Boss on Saturday, who was aboard Turffontein for his William Reid success.
Other exciting contenders in the Canterbury Stakes include Gai Waterhouse’s last start Group 3 Liverpool City Cup winner Dreamscape in barrier five, consistent mare Hot Danish drawn ideally in barrier two, and the locally trained Black Piranha having his first autumn start from barrier seven.
Drawn awkwardly in the far outside barrier, Peter Snowden’s lightly raced Lonhro colt Demerit is also worth keeping an eye on for a place here.
The two programmed highlights at the meeting are the $600, 000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and the $400, 000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).
The 2010 Canterbury Stakes is scheduled as race five and is due to commence at 2:50pm (NSW time).
