Canterbury Stakes

The Canterbury Stakes is an exciting Group 2 thoroughbred race held at the scenic Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney as part of the great line up of races on Coolmore Stud Classic Day.

Taking place in mid March each year, the Group 2 Canterbury Stakes is a 1300m sprint run under weight-for-age conditions and is worth $150,000.

In 2011 the Canterbury Stakes will take place at Rosehill on Saturday March 19.

The Canterbury Stakes is always a hotly contested affair as the winner is exempt from ballot for the prestigious Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) held a fortnight later on Golden Slipper Day.

History

The esteemed Canterbury Stakes was first held in 1929 when Amounis claimed victory.

It began as a Principal race and was elevated to its more prestigious Group 2 status in 1979.

From 1929 – 1972 the Canterbury Stakes was run over six furlongs. In 1973 the race distance was converted to 1200m. Later on in 2004 the length was decreased to its current 1300m.

The Canterbury Stakes winners list features a number of turf champions including All Silent (2009), Dance Hero (2005) and Shogun Lodge (2001).
